TOOLS

There are several basic props that I recommend students acquire, although not all are needed immediately.  Most of these items serve multiple purposes.  You'll find that once you own a few useful props, your practice will take on a new dimension.

Sticky mat:   $22 (usually in stock at studio)    Although I supply mats for use in class, I strongly recommend that you own one.  It’s more hygienic to use your personal mat in class, and it’s a very useful item in home practice.

Strap with buckle: 6', 8', 10' (prices vary) Think of these as "arm lengtheners”, among other things.   There are many times when even experienced yoga practitioners find straps useful.

Bolster:  $40.00 to $60.00 + shipping(special order)

Blocks:   Prices vary.  Foam (when in stock) $9;  cork and wood blocks are available from yoga props suppliers.

Firm blankets:  (special order) $19 to $30depending on quantity ordered and
shipping cost.  Owning at least two just for yoga use is a good idea.  It's important to use blankets with a very close weave and firm texture.  Good quality Mexican blankets or wool Army blankets work best.  They can substitute for bolsters as well as being essential for support in shoulder stands.

Small rug, with a tight weave, but still foldable. These are handy as knee cushions and neck supports.

Kitchen timer :  preferably digital, to avoid being distracted by a loud tick!  This is not an essential tool, but can be a big help in your practice.

Eyesbag:  $10 (in stock).  Helps promote relaxation.

Chair:  $9.00 (available at WalMart) to $65.00 (special order).  Used for supported standing poses, supported inversions, and in many other instances.  May be either a metal folding chair or a rigid one you have in your home, but you'll want it to have enough space between chair back and seat for your body to fit through.
