B.K.S. Iyengar answers the question:  "What is yoga?"

"Yoga is one of the 6 systems of Indian philosophy. It is a method, which helps Man to search for divinity within himself. This system was first codified by Sage Patanjali in the 5th century BC into 196 terse aphorisms.

It consists of 8 aspects or limbs and therefore is called as Astanga Yoga. The 8 aspects are Yama (social discipline); niyama (moral discipline); asana (presentation of body postures to attain stability in body and steadiness in intelligence); pranayama (modulation of breath to distribute the energy within the system); pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses of perception and the mind); dharana (concentration); dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (state of eternal bliss). "

You will find these pages to be good sources of information.  Names of some poses may slightly, or even completely, different from those we use in our classes, but the descriptions and instructions can be helpful.  The pronunciation guide is invaluable, providing audio pronunciation, as well as English translations and, in most cases, links to photos of the poses.  You'll notice that the two sites are interconnected, so you can get to either one from the other.
