BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

PHILOSOPHY:

I practice and teach hatha (physical) yoga in the style of B.K.S. Iyengar, emphasizing focus, alignment, balance and effective breathing techniques.  Props are used whenever needed to make the postures more accessible.  Participants will often work quite hard, but at the same time will learn not to push beyond their own limits.  It is appreciation of the processrather than striving for a goal that defines effective yoga practice.  Emotional, mental, and physical changes can occur, but the changes will be gradual:

“It doesn’t happen all at once…. You become…  It takes a long time.”

                                                                Margery Williams

That's not to say, however, that the process isn't fun, gratifying, and enriching for instructor and student alike!  Laughter plays a large part in both healthful living and yoga and at Blue Heron Yoga we manage to relax through laughter regularly.  May it always be so. Students also learn to be very still, mentally and physically, and to allow the breath to release tension and discomfort.  I feel quite sure that a fair percentage of yoga students come to class primarily for the relaxation time at the end of each session!  Improved posture and balance, increased flexibility, and deepening sense of self are simply "lagniappe" (an old Creole word for "something extra").
